It has been a goal of mine to own and raise gundogs for as long as I can remember. I remember being at a scout camp, I must have been about 14. The guy who lived next to the camp had a great looking shorthair pup that would pace back and forth along the fence trying to get someone to come over and play. I don't remember much about what we did at that camp, but I do remember telling my brother and a friend, "Someday I'm going to have a dog just like that!"
I've never forgotten the look on that dogs face, even as a pup he had a confidence and purpose that's hard to explain in words. There is nothing in this world cooler than watching a good dog do it's job. It amazes me how naturally it comes to them.
When I got married I told my wife "I reserve the right to bring home good dogs." She thought I was just kidding. Now five boys and eight dogs later she's come to understand that by the time I say it out loud it's already happened in my mind. I am grateful for her support and friendship as we have started living this dream I have had.
